Help us evaluate a new product!

I NEED YOUR HELP! 8-)

PLEASE take a few moments and answer as many of the questions below as you can. I'm currently evaluating a new product for our web site that provides business owners with greater insight into their company data, identifies emerging trends, and increases bottom line profits.

I would really appreciate your feedback to help determine if it's the right fit. :)

You can either copy the questions below and paste them into a new email with your answers and send it to me at survey@thecontractorsgroup.com or, if you prefer, I've set up an online form here where you can submit your answers. :)

Thank you for helping to keep TheContractorsGroup.com the best contractor's site on the web!

1. Do you use Excel spreadsheets to manage your inventory, budget, finances, sales data or any other business critical information? (If yes, please proceed to question #2; If no, please proceed to the last question, #6)

2. Do you currently, or plan to, present Excel spreadsheet data (i.e. gross sales growth, increase in net profits, etc.) to any other members of management, shareholders or partners? If so, what are your goals when presenting your data?

3. Do you use your Excel spreadsheet data for forecasting or for business analysis (i.e. do you predict future results based on current data, or predict results based on modifications to your existing numbers)?

4. If you knew about a product that allowed you to turn your spreadsheet data into visually compelling and easy to understand Flash-based graphs and charts, would you be interested?

5. If you could create an easy to understand budget model that allowed you to quickly predict changes to your bottom line by adjusting material costs, increasing prices, reducing payroll, etc., would you be interested?

6. How do you track your purchase orders, projects, invoices, etc.?

*If you'd like to receive a special one-time email from me that'll have results from this survey and information on the product I'm evaluating, please let me know in your email. :)

This cap will keep your head up to 30Å cooler than the outside air you're working in. Matter of fact, the way this hat is made, the hotter it is the better the hat works!!!

The patented Hydroweave® system uses the sun’s energy to cause evaporation that draws heat away from your head. Your body heat is conducted upwards and released slowly through the cap, keeping your head both cool and dry.

It's available in Navy and Khaki and they're going quick. Get yours now before they run out!

California Compliant Construction Contracts

After scouring the CSLB website and the various publications they've put together, we've created a construction contract package that is 100% compliant with California regulations.

Included in the contract forms package is:

  • a two-page contract that contains everything the California license board requires for a compliant contract AND
  • every single notice the license board requires the contractor to give to the homeowner AND
  • a copy of the CSLB publication "Home Improvement Contracts: The pieces to the puzzle", which tells exactly what is required in a contract in order for it to be compliant to California laws
  • a free 20-minute consultation with a practicing construction attorney, about any business matter including contracts

I've included a copy of the CSLB publication just because I feel it's important that contractors have an opportunity to read it and determine for themselves what the law requires.

There's no charge for the CSLB publication, if you'd like to read the CSLB publication without, or before, purchasing the contract package just send me an email and I'll be happy to email a copy of the publication to you. diane@thecontractorsgroup.com

To read more, see a free preview of the contract, and purchase the package, please follow this link:

Helpful Suggestion From A Reader...

#1 - I C E = In Case of Emergency

A BIG thank you to one of our readers, Howard Royster of RR Building & Repair LLC in Va Beach VA, who sent me some excellent info regarding cell phones...

A Cambridge(UK)-based paramedic has launched a national campaign with Vodafone to encourage people to store emergency contact details in their mobile phones.

Bob Brotchie, a clinical team leader for the East Anglian Ambulance NHS Trust, came up with the plan last year after struggling to get contact details from shocked or injured patients.

Now, while this campaign was actually launched in the UK, there's no reason why we here in the US can't adopt the idea! :)

Figure out who you'd like the rescue personnel to contact in case you are involved in some type of emergency and cannot tell the rescue personnel yourself who to call.

Enter the phone number of the person you'd want the rescue personnel to call but rather than entering the person's name, instead enter ICE or I C E.

The rescue personnel can search your contacts on your phone, find the ICE and instantly call that number. Voila! You're emergency contact person knows right away that you're in trouble.

If you have more than one emergency contact you'd like to enter, then enter the first one as ICE (or I C E), the second as ICE2 (or I C E 2), the third as ICE3, and so on.

Tip: Do this on your kids' phones as well!

Anyone who knows a fireman, policeman, paramedic, etc. - tell them about this so that they can tell their co-workers and spread the word.

Read more about this program in the UK

ps: There's been some concern voiced that adding ICE to your phone will allow bad guys to access your contact list in your phone, and/or that adding ICE to your phone will cost you. This simply isn't true, ICE is NOT a hoax nor is there a charge for it, so if you get an email claiming these things, just delete it.

Ask Dave

Below is a great question from a fencing contractor, about non-payment and custom materials and Dave's answer can be applied to any trade that involves custom materials.

Remember, you can call Dave at 619-682-4842 and chat with him for about 20 minutes about any business matter, at no charge! Just be sure to mention us. :)

And now for that "Ask Dave" question:

Q: I am a fence installation contractor. A customer recently hired my company to install a custom iron fence that we special ordered from a fence fabricator. After the contract was signed and the fence ordered and paid for, but before we began any work, the customer canceled the contract. Can I record a mechanic's lien for the contract amount?

A: Unfortunately, you cannot record a mechanic's lien for anything but labor and materials that have actually been incorporated into the property. You do, however, have a claim for breach of contract against the homeowner who hired you and you may be entitled to both lost profit damages as well as the expenses related to purchasing the custom fence. If you obtain a judgment against the homeowner on this breach of contract claim, that judgment can then be used to create a lien against the customer's real property.
